Withdrawal Agreement Timeline

Prime Minister Boris Johnson wins the British general election. It is therefore likely that the Brexit deal will soon be adopted. If the British Parliament approves the agreement, the European Parliament can vote on it in January. On the European Union side, the European Parliament also approved the ratification of the agreement on 29 January 2020[40] and the Council of the European Union approved the conclusion of the agreement by e-mail on 30 January 2020. [42] That is why, on 30 January 2020, the European Union also tabled its instrument for ratification of the agreement, concluding the agreement[43] and allowing it to enter into force on the date of the UK`s withdrawal from the EU on 31 January 2020, at 11 .m GMT. On 22 October 2019, the House of Commons agreed, by 329 votes to 299, to give a second reading to the revised withdrawal agreement (negotiated by Boris Johnson earlier this month), but when the accelerated timetable it had proposed did not receive the necessary parliamentary support, Johnson announced that the law would be overturned. [38] [12] The draft withdrawal agreement reflects the December 2017 joint report by EU and UK government negotiators on the first legal phase of negotiations. It also proposes, on the basis of the EU`s positions, a text on other withdrawal issues mentioned in the joint report, which are not yet agreed upon. Finally, the text on the transitional period will be integrated on the basis of the supplementary negotiating directives (Article 50) adopted by the Council on 29 January 2018 (Article 50). At its meeting, the European Council discussed the terms of withdrawal and the future relationship between the EU and the UK on Brexit and preparations for negotiations on future EU-UK relations after the withdrawal. They reaffirmed their objective of establishing as close a relationship as possible with the United Kingdom in the future and welcomed the Commission`s decision to reinstate Michel Barnier. July 1 is the legal deadline for signing an extension of the post-Brexit transition period.

Under the terms of the withdrawal agreement, the transitional period may be extended by 12 or 24 months.
